History is never static; it is a dynamic, ever-present force in our world. More than one hundred and fifty years after Appomattox, Americans of every background continue to grapple with the enduring legacies of the Civil War. Symbols dotting the public landscape elicit a range of emotional responses. What is the relationship of the built environment to challenging histories? How does each generation look to the past to make sense of contemporary life?

In commemoration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Hauenstein Center is proud to partner with Grand Valley’s Division of Inclusion and Equity to host an event on American memory, past and present. Christy S. Coleman, CEO of the American Civil War Museum in Richmond, Virginia, and former president of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, will offer insight into these and other questions.

This event is free and open to the public. Please click here to RSVP and for more information:
