1. What has your journey been since graduation?
My journey since graduation has had many hurdles. Significant health challenges have altered my path in ways I hadn’t expected. I am an occupational therapist who works as an independent consultant. Recently, I had an OT article published in a peer reviewed professional journal. I am also an artist who creates commissioned works in watercolors, polymer clay, fiber arts, and metals. In 2010, I participated in ArtPrize with a polymer clay relief sculpture. Combining my passions and using art as a therapeutic medium with clients to promote wellness has been especially rewarding.
2. How has Grand Valley had a role in your journey?
GVSU has equipped me with the skill sets and confidence needed to meet the demands of my profession. Through participating in leadership roles at Grand Valley, I have developed great communication and interpersonal skills. I also value the community connections that I made as a student, and have continued to volunteer at two of the organizations after graduation.
3. What is your favorite Grand Valley memory?
My favorite GVSU memory is of my OT grad school class. We were a group of just seven. I enjoyed all the field trips we went on, the various projects we worked on together, and how we challenged each other to do our best. I’m grateful for the lifelong friendships we made.
4. What three words describe your experience at Grand Valley?
Challenging, supportive, transformative.
5. How, and why, have you stayed involved with Grand
Valley since graduation?
I had so many great experiences at GVSU. It is only right to give back to an institution that gave me so much. I have stayed connected with the OT department after graduation, volunteered at various GVSU events, and I currently serve as a Board Member on the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
