1. What has your journey been since graduation?
After graduation, I moved to Fort Myers, Florida, for two years where I taught 2nd and 4th grade. In 2016, I moved to Riverview, Florida, where I was hired to teach 4th grade math and science.
2. How has Grand Valley had a role in your journey?
Grand Valley prepared me for my teaching roles in diverse environments. My professors frequently addressed cultural sensitivity! I also felt well prepared to interview for both jobs I’ve had, and have felt confident in my teaching methods that were gathered through some great professors!
3. What is your favorite Grand Valley memory?
Being on the synchronized skating team my freshmen and sophomore years. I am still really close with some of the girls on the team!
4. What three words describe your experience at Grand Valley?
5. How, and why, have you stayed involved with Grand
Valley since graduation?
I found the Tampa Bay Alumni Association when I was living in Fort Myers. Even though I was two hours away, I attended a couple of events. Not knowing anyone in Fort Myers, seeing people in Laker gear and Detroit sports gear made me miss home a little less! When I moved to the Tampa area, I became more involved in helping plan the meet ups.
6. Why are you proud to be a Laker for a Lifetime?
Grand Valley offered a personalized college experience. I truly felt valued as a student and felt that I was prepared to be a teacher upon graduation. The Grand Valley experience is like no other.
7. What do you like to do for fun?
I am involved in a women’s craft beer organization called “Barley’s Angels.” We are a home brew and beer education club. Our biggest initiative has been fundraising and donating to the Spring of Tampa Bay, which is a shelter for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. I’ve met some amazing women through this. Some even from Grand Rapids! I am also a part of the Brandon Guild for Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, where we plan fundraising and events for the children. It’s a really rewarding and light hearted group.
8. What is your favorite quote/motto to live by?
“People won’t remember what you said or did, they’ll remember how you made them feel.”
9. What motivates you?
My biggest motivating factor is doing good for others. My job is centered around 50 adorable kids, and while my hobbies may include craft beer, our mission is supporting women and others in need. Helping others gives me an energy like no other.
10. What book or movie have you recently enjoyed?
I am currently reading A Million Little Pieces.
