Grand Valleyýs M.Ed. in literacy studies offers the following emphasis areas:
- Reading/language arts
- Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL)

The reading/language arts emphasis is helpful for classroom teachers who want to expand their skills in dealing with students in language arts programs, as well as for all professionals who deal with the problems of reading adjustment.

The TESOL emphasis provides training in linguistics principles and their application, theories of language acquisition, instructional methodology and curriculum design, and other topics.
